Joan Celdran: "The basis of a documentary is a rather casual event that arises at any time of the day"

How did you get inspired to be a journalist? Were you clear that you wanted to dedicate yourself to this?

Actually it was all a coincidence, because at that time, at the school where I studied, there was no activity related to this, but I had many friends who went to another school in my town where they did carry out activities on the radio. So, it was through that group of friends that I ended up in radio activities and from there I started all this.

What is your professional trajectory? How did you start in the world of journalism?

Well, I started when I was sixteen years old and today I still work in the journalistic field. Specifically, I dedicate myself to television and my specialty is documentaries. I was very lucky, since working at TV3 opened up many opportunities for me.

How do you see the world of documentary? It's a difficult world?

Honestly, it is a complicated world but with technique and experience you are acquiring much more knowledge than when you do it for the first time.

How do you think this genre is changing today?

Wanting to change things and show the reality of our society is the goal of any documentary I've directed. All the genres that exist have their difficulties and we must do it in the best possible way.

You have directed several documentaries and have written several books. Which of these works are you most proud of?

I feel proud of all the work I have done, since I have always had a great time doing it and, above all, I have had a very broad and rewarding learning experience.

Why did you decide to make a documentary about Jaume Sisa? What attracted you to him?

The basis of a documentary is something casual and that arises at any time of the day. A situation that I experienced in the Barcelona metro was the trigger for one of the most important productions on a personal level. Thus, in the case of the documentary on Jaume Sisa, it was a similar event.

The "Drawn Man" documentary goes back to the year 2000. Will there be a second part?

Having to document the life of an artist like Jaume Sisa is quite an extensive job. Within a person's life there are very relevant moments, and sometimes the fact of summarizing it in a certain time is very complicated. Therefore, it is possible that we document a second part of "The Drawn Man", since we have enough material to do so.
