Three years after the split between the historically heterogeneous feminist movement materialized, the wounds remain open. And the appointment of a new Minister of Equality, the socialist Ana Redondo, seems that, at least, in the short term she will not succeed either, such is the confrontation between both factions: those against the trans law, those in favor of the abolition of prostitution and against surrogacy (the feminists most closely linked to the socialists) and those who support the trans law, and avoid issues such as prostitution and surrogacy (a movement very close to Podemos).
The socialist part of the Government, with the Minister of Equality, Ana Redondo, has made it clear which side it is on and that is why they attended the first of the two demonstrations called today.
A few thousand people gathered this afternoon in the center of Madrid in the 25-N march called by the Madrid Feminist Movement, made up of veteran feminist women. Along with Redondo, the Government spokesperson, Pilar Alegría; the Minister of Science and Universities, Diana Morant; the Minister of Housing and Urban Agenda, Isabel Rodríguez; the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska; the president of the Congress of Deputies, Francina Armengol; and the former vice president of the Government and socialist deputy, Carmen Calvo, in addition to organic and institutional positions of the PSOE.
In the afternoon there is another demonstration to which former Equality Minister Irene Montero and her entire team will possibly go, called by the 8-M Commission. It is the third year that the feminist movement has expressed itself divided, although the first in the context of 25-N and with the recent ministerial portfolio. The deputies of Sumar and the Minister of Youth and Children, Sira Rego, have also confirmed their attendance.
This morning's demonstration took place along Alcalá Street and Gran Vía in Madrid, with the motto 'Against violence against women. Citizen Unity and Institutional Response'.
Those attending the march denounce prostitution, pornography and reproductive violence as forms of sexist violence, as well as the denialism of the extreme right about the existence of this scourge. In addition, protesters denounce the rise in femicides, which so far this year has already exceeded fifty victims.
Likewise, in the middle of the concentration, almost a hundred people have remembered the women murdered during 2023 by wearing white tunics and masks (whether by their partners or ex-partners or another type of aggressor).
The new Minister of Equality, Ana Redondo, has called for the “unity” of the feminist movement throughout Spain to “weave the sensitivities” that have generated divisions in recent years and fight together against “all types of violence towards women.” women".
Redondo has compared feminism to “a great orchestra” in which there are “different tones and sensibilities” but has stressed that “the important thing is that the melody” is the same so that the “soundtrack” she seeks can be heard loud and clear. combat “all violence.”
To this end, Redondo has advanced that his first steps at the head of the ministry will involve meeting “with all the groups that have been distanced” in recent years, although he did not want to delve into the reasons that have caused the division within the ministry itself. Feminist movement.
