Catalonia will withdraw the concert in the ESO to two schools that segregate by sex

The Minister of Education of the Generalitat of Catalonia, Anna Simó, has announced that the Government will withdraw the concert at the ESO stage in two Catalan schools that were still segregated by sex - the Viaró School in Sant Cugat del Vallès (Barcelona) and the Camp Joliu de L'Arboç (Tarragona)-. The measure will be effective from September 6, when the new school year begins.

Simó has affirmed that the schools in question will no longer have public financing next year in ESO, in application of the endorsement of the Constitutional Court (TC) of April this year to withdraw the concert to this type of centers. Until now, these schools "had precautionary measures" for which they had to maintain their funding.

"If any family wants to take their children to secondary school in a school that segregates by sex, they will have to do it 100% privately, not with public resources," he insisted.

Simó explained that these two schools to which the precautionary measures are lifted can appeal and that, when there is a final ruling, the Ministry will claim through administrative means "all the amounts" that it has had to pay for its financing during the application of these measures .

On the other hand, the concert will be maintained in the Infant and Primary stages at concerted schools that segregate by sex until the 2026-2027 academic year, which is when the contract ends.

Simó recalled that this is due to the fact that "in the stage of 155, in an absolutely hidden way", it was agreed to extend the concerts in Infant and Primary schools of subsidized schools that segregated by sex, so they are still valid until the 2026 academic year. 2027 and the Government has to continue financing them until then.

The minister explained that, in February 2025, the department will require these schools to meet the requirements to maintain the concert and, therefore, not segregate by sex. In case of not doing so, the financing will be withdrawn, just as it is done from this September in the ESO stage.

Simó celebrated that with this announcement "today coeducation and equality between boys and girls and adolescents win." Sources from the Ministry of Education have assured that another eight Catalan schools that segregated this course by sex "have already been mixed" and, therefore, have maintained the concert.
