Why you should have an iron skillet in your kitchen

Stainless steel and aluminum pans are the most common in our kitchens. Although iron pans provide interesting advantages, many people discard them believing that they require complex maintenance, but nothing could be further from the truth.

From the Instagram profile @somosmicrobiota (29 thousand followers), biologist and nutritionist Mónica Pérez explains why you should have an iron frying pan in your kitchen, as well as how to cure it before the first use and take care of it afterwards to extend its useful life.

Far from what some believe, there is no reason to opt for a high-priced iron skillet, but very affordable options can be found on the market. One of the advantages of iron pans is that they are durable and versatile. “The iron skillet is sturdy and distributes heat evenly. Invest in an iron skillet and you will have a kitchen companion for life,” notes the expert.

In addition to its durability, cooking with an iron skillet also has health benefits. The first of them is that they help eliminate toxins from your kitchen, since the biologist affirms that by replacing old frying pans with iron ones we will be avoiding substances harmful to health.

On the other hand, cooking in an iron skillet can add extra iron to foods. This is corroborated by a study available in the National Library of Medicine, a systematic review in which a significant improvement was observed in the amount of iron in foods and in its bioavailability when foods are cooked using iron pots or pans.
