Why you should check your cholesterol if you have erection problems

Erection problems are associated with multiple causes, such as stress, medication side effects or cardiovascular problems. High blood pressure, diabetes or cholesterol are conditions that obstruct the normal circulation of blood and, therefore, erectile dysfunction is one of its consequences. A patient with bad cholesterol levels —triglycerides and LDL— above 240 mg/dl has twice the risk of suffering from erection problems than another with healthy cholesterol levels, below 180 mg/dl.

The high levels of fat circulating in the blood cause inflammation of the endothelium or inner skin of the arteries through which the blood vessels become clogged. This phenomenon is what is known as arteriosclerosis and mainly affects the fine arteries of the circumference of the penis. This obstruction prevents the entry of blood into the cavernous bodies of the penis and also alters the part of the nervous system that is involved in erections.

Erections are a good indicator of cardiovascular health in men. 6 out of 10 patients with erectile dysfunction suffer from cardiovascular diseases. That is why, in the event of any symptom of dysfunction, it is advisable to carry out a blood test and consult a medical specialist to prevent the problem from escalating.

Similar to cholesterol, high blood pressure causes vasoconstriction of the veins and arteries, that is, the narrowing of the blood vessels. Also, diabetes hardens the walls of the arteries and contracts them. All these cardiovascular diseases prevent the dilation of blood vessels, which causes blood to circulate with insufficient pressure and affects erections.

To combat this type of ailments it is advisable to have an active sexual life to maintain libido and practice the mechanism that causes erections. On the other hand, physical exercise and a healthy diet will help you strengthen your self-esteem and regulate your testosterone levels, while keeping cholesterol at bay. Lastly, take care of your rest and avoid stress and avoid self-medicating before consulting the doctor, since an opposite reaction may occur that deepens dysfunction problems.
