What does it mean when your dog scratches his bed?

It is increasingly common for dogs to use beds to sleep instead of the floor. Therefore, there are blankets, cushions and all kinds of accessories that make it more comfortable for them to stretch out and sleep deeply without problem.

However, sometimes our dogs have the tendency to scratch their own bed, a seemingly innocent gesture, but one that has a very animal meaning behind it.

On TikTok @ginnybodeguera explains to us that scratching the bed “is a way of indicating ownership” for the dog: “In their pads they have glands that emit a special smell and it is unique to each animal,” he begins by explaining.

“When they scratch their bed, they spread their scent to indicate to others that it is theirs,” he comments, thus explaining why we often see our dogs insistently scratching their bed.

In short, “it is their instinctive way of marking territory” as is the case with other less hygienic ways that dogs also use, but in this case it is used for the place where they sleep.
