The fashion of 'session' beers arrives in Spain

The latest studies on the beer market suggest that alcohol consumption will be increasingly conscious and moderate, a trend that has been promoted by the younger generations. As excessive drinking becomes obsolete, fashions more compatible with other activities or motivated by the control of self-image on social networks emerge, and one of the most popular is session beers.

This trend is based on the production of beers with less alcohol content and is established in European countries with as much beer tradition as Austria and Germany. Recently it has also landed in Spain thanks to brands such as Cruzcampo, which has just launched its Cruzcampo Tremenda with half the alcohol of the original version.

Although the Spanish brewery points out that its new release has an intense flavor and a lot of body - "thanks to the sweetness of the pilsen malt and the bitterness of the hops", they affirm from Cruzcampo -, the sessions do not have a lot of hops and malt, nor are they usually very bitter.

That does not mean that they are tasteless, but rather that they are more balanced. On the other hand, their alcohol content is usually below 4-5% and they tend to be more refreshing. That of Cruzcampo, for example, has 2.4%.

Elena Morales, Director of Innovation at Heineken Spain, believes that this phenomenon has a place in our country because "the Spanish have a great way of drinking beer, since what they are looking for is flavor, enjoyment or certain properties, not alcohol content". Explain.

In the end, we are also large consumers of this drink: according to Statista, the per capita intake of beer in Spain is around 50 liters per year. Hence the need to alternate your drink with softer options that allow beer to be combined with any event without fearing its effects.

"Consumers are open to new options that allow us to diversify or extend the brewing moment, without losing the taste of a good beer, such as Cruzcampo Tremenda," concludes María Ruiz Sanguino, head of the brand.
