Everything you need to know about doing 'tummy time' with your baby

The stimulation of babies is an essential part of their correct development, both physically and sensorially. We are not just talking about making funny sounds and cuddles while watching us from his crib or hammock, but it is also essential to implement certain activities and exercises in his routine to encourage his growth and learning.

In the case of newborns, it is evident that we cannot ask them for a while playing with the ball or practicing mathematics. But there is an exercise that we must incorporate into their day to day, as it brings numerous benefits for their motor skills and their psychological and emotional development. This is the "tummy time" or time upside down.

The translation of the term “tummy time” is tummy time, since this practice consists of placing the baby face down on a flat, but comfortable surface. Since babies often spend a lot of time lying on their backs, this method works to strengthen their neck, shoulders, back, and arms, as well as improve their head support.

It is best to do it in a safe area, where the baby lies upright on his stomach in a fixed and stable area, but is comfortable. Therefore, the bed or the sofa are not a good idea, since they are too soft and are at a height. Instead, it is better to opt for the floor, placing it on top of a baby mat or blanket.

Before proceeding to do "tummy time" with your little one, consult your pediatrician. Generally they can practice it from newborns and it is best to start for short periods of time each day and gradually increase the duration of the exercise as you see that it is progressing well and enjoying the moment.

The baby should be constantly watched by an adult while practicing tummy time. In fact, the best thing is that her companion tries to get her attention by talking to her or showing her toys or a story, to motivate her to keep her head up.

In addition, it should be done at a time when the baby is calm, but awake. May he not be irritated, or tired, or crying. Nor should it be done when he has just eaten, but it is better to wait until at least an hour has passed since the last feeding.
