The first surprise of this spring, at least for Netflix, is The Night Agent. It centers on an FBI agent, Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso), who works in a secret White House office and who, when he answers the call of a young woman in danger, Rose Larkin (Luciane Buchanan), finds himself involved in a conspiracy and not knowing who he can trust among his superiors. In its first four days it became the third best launch in the history of the platform, following in the footsteps of Wednesday and Dahmer, and on its sixth day it was already renewed for a second season. And what can we expect from the new episodes?
“What I can tell you is that we sold Netflix that each season would tell its own plot, mostly self-contained, with a beginning, middle, and end to the story, and that future seasons would include some but not all of the characters that we had seen in the previous one”, revealed the creator of the series, Shawn Ryan, in a promotional interview prior to the renewal.
This plan, in his opinion, "is quite solid" and for him it was important "not to tell a specific story over five seasons." "I want to tell a specific story in one season to give the audience some satisfaction and let them see how everything is resolved," he clarified in an interview for Deadline. And he is right, since the first season did not leave loose ends and the public "can feel a certain sensation of completion."
After it was revealed that members close to President Travers (Kari Matchett) had organized the terrorist attack on the Washington subway and even planned to assassinate the head of state, Sutherland managed to stop the final blow and reveal the whole truth, which included uncovering the implication of Diane Farr (Hong Chau), Travers' right-hand man, in the conspiracy.
Furthermore, not even Peter's main trauma was left unresolved: whether his father was a traitor to the homeland, as had been investigated by the FBI and reported in the media, or whether he had been a victim of the system. What was the truth? That he allowed himself to be seduced by secret agents from an enemy country and that, when he was discovered, he trained to be a double agent and return to work for the United States. The problem was that, during this process, he was killed.
The idea for the next season, therefore, is based on telling a new story with "a limited number of characters from this season", although he must first "plan everything" in the writers' room with the rest of his companions. And, considering the outcome, the possibilities are endless. And it is that the president personally encourages Peter to become a night agent and work on the most impossible missions offered by his intelligence services. In the last scene you can see the hero on a plane, without even knowing where he is going, opening a confidential document with the data of his new mission.
And who could return apart from Gabriel Basso? At the moment, those who have the most numbers are Kari Matchett's President Travers, the secret service agent Chelsea Arrington (Fola Evans-Akingbola) and Luciane Buchanan's Rose Larkin, who says she will settle in California to resume her career in the world of technology after being kicked out of the company she helped found.
“I love the questions we have to answer: What does it mean for Peter to be a night agent? Where is he headed? Now that Rose returns to California to relaunch her career, what is the relationship between Peter and Rose?" asked the creator, a screenwriter with extensive experience in American television as the creator of a police classic like The Shield and series with a more commercial profile like SWAT.
