Reese Witherspoon has been teasing fans for years. She always claims that she has a second sequel in the works for Legally Blonde, the series that made 141 million on a budget of 20 million and that became an iconic comedy of popular culture, but it never arrives. But, while the script has not even been written, she already has two parallel projects based on this intellectual property: two television spin-offs.
From Prime Video, according to Deadline, they are interested in exploiting the title. At the moment, it already has one of the series in full development with Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage as creators, who have signed series such as OC and Gossip Girl. No details are known about the possible plot or what characters or elements it could rescue from the films released in 2001 and 2003.
It is known who is in charge of production: Reese Witherspoon and her partner Lauren Neustadter for Hello Sunshine, the Oscar-winning actress's production company, Marc Platt, producer of the films released to date, and Amazon MGM Studios. And precisely from Hello Sunshine and Amazon, a second spin-off is also being developed, still in a more preliminary phase.
Legally Blonde was a paradigmatic success of the first decade of the new millennium. With a script by Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith, who adapted Amanda Brown's novel, it premiered as a silly comedy. Some critics, however, were able to understand to what extent the humor worked, the ingenuity of the jokes based on a conventional formula and the star quality of Witherspoon, who proved her value at the box office with a production that depended on her charisma.
Its sequel in 2003, with the protagonist moving to Washington to influence politics with Sally Field as a mentor, was not received with the same enthusiasm: Kate Kondell's script was not up to par. But, as happened with Mean Girls in 2004, time turned the original Legally Blonde into one of the most iconic comedies of the era and Elle Woods, the lawyer played by Witherspoon, into a memorable character.
