Bobby Spencer, the cousin who always supported Princess Diana, dies

On Saturday, May 6, the celebrations for the coronation of Carlos III in the United Kingdom will take place. Some events that will last three days, with a religious celebration in London, lunches, recitals and a day dedicated to volunteering in which the royal family will participate. King Charles III will be 74 when he ascends the throne, in contrast to his mother Elizabeth II's 26 when she was crowned at Westminster Abbey in 1953.

A celebration, 70 years ago, in which there was already a certain omen about the fate of the Spencer family in the life of the Windsors, since the uncle of the future Diana of Wales, Captain Robert George Spencer, served as usher of the queen on her coronation day. A man who would become her niece Diana's greatest support, and who has passed away at 90 years of age.

Born in 1932, Robert Spencer, affectionately called "Bobby" by everyone, had a special relationship with the later Princess Diana. The younger brother of the princess's paternal grandfather, he was soon given an honorary position as usher at the coronation of then-Princess Elizabeth thanks to his impeccable military career.

From the beginning, Bobby was especially attached to Diana, and when the press began to attack her, he often came to her defense.

"She was always very happy, she was very funny, it was a pleasure to be around her - a young lady who obviously had to be called out from time to time like any other young girl, but only in the nicest way possible," said the journalist Richard Eden in the Daily Mail newspaper, according to what the princess's uncle told him about his memories.

Despite Captain Spencer's regard in the military and his connections to the royal house, Bobby Spencer left the UK and took up residence in West Palm Beach, Florida (USA), where he has lived until the same day of his death. What's more, the local newspaper paid tribute to him, describing him as a man who "will be missed by many in the UK". His ashes, as he wished, will be scattered in the ocean.

A death that coincides with the wedding celebrations of one of his great-nieces, Lady Amelia Spencer, who married her fiancé, Greg Mallet, on March 24 in Cape Town (South Africa) after three years of engagement.
