A 23-year-old true crime fan kills a woman "out of curiosity"

In recent years, the true crime format has become indispensable for regular viewer viewing. The morbid curiosity of real murders, mysterious disappearances and unsolved kidnappings expands in every corner thanks to shows like Crims. However, not everything is good news, since some studies warn that continued consumption of these products can affect our psychology.

A shocking case of this nature has occurred in South Korea. Jung Yoo-jung, 23 years old and a declared follower of true crimes, has been sentenced to death after the murder of an English teacher in the city of Busan, last May. Despite changing her testimony on many occasions, the culprit ended up confessing that she carried out the crime out of “pure curiosity,” given her interest in the format and the different variants of it.

Jung's profile is that of a single, unemployed woman who lived with her grandfather. As she told the trial, she became obsessed with the idea of “trying to commit a murder,” turning to a school tutoring app to find the perfect victim. The criminal was looking for more than 50 people, preferably women, with the possibility of being able to take private classes in her house. In the end, she ended up finding a 26-year-old woman in Busan.

At the time of the crime, Jung showed up at the victim's home in a school uniform, having posed as the mother of a high school student who needed English classes. Once there, he stabbed the woman more than 100 times, even after taking her life. He then dismembered her and took a taxi to a park located north of the city, with the intention of getting rid of her remains. A fact that alerted the driver.

It was the taxi driver who notified the authorities after Jung left a bloody suitcase in the undergrowth. Likewise, the police stated in her report that the murderer completely ignored the security cameras in the area, which captured her repeatedly entering and leaving the victim's house. Still, they insisted that the crime was premeditated and very well calculated, after finding searches on how to kill and dispose of bodies in his Internet history.

Jung confessed in June and requested a reduced sentence alleging psychological disorders, which was denied by the Busan court due to the methodical preparation of the case. The same legal body declared this Friday that the crime has shocked South Korean society, spreading fears that anyone could become a victim for no reason and generating a general feeling of mistrust.
