The DGT indicates the type of traffic accident that causes the most deaths in Spain

The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has provided data on fatal accidents in Spain during June. Thus, during the previous month there were a total of 78 accidents with deaths in which 87 people lost their lives, that is, 9 less than in the same period of 2022. It should be noted that during these 30 days mobility increased by 1.2% compared to June of the previous year and some 37.8 million long-distance journeys were registered. The date with the most fatalities was Sunday, June 11, with 10 deaths, while there was only one day without any victims, on Monday, June 5.

Regarding the mortality balance during the first half of the year, half a thousand people have perished in a total of 451 traffic accidents. This means 31 fewer deaths than in the same period of 2022, that is, a decrease of 6%.

Conventional roads are those that accumulate the highest number of deaths in accidents. In June, 63 people lost their lives on this type of road, while 23 did so on the motorway or dual carriageway.

According to the data collected by the DGT, road exits continue to be the type of accident that registers the highest number of fatalities. Specifically, 33 people died in these circumstances, in which only the wrecked vehicle was involved.

The information provided by Traffic shows a large increase in fatalities in lateral and frontal collisions. Thus, 20 victims perished in June 2023, that is, 12 more than in the same month last year. On the contrary, fatalities in frontal collisions (15 in 2023 versus 23 in 2022) and rear collisions (10 vs 11) decreased.

It should also be noted that 12 of the 87 deceased were not using the corresponding safety system at the time of the accident: 9 car drivers, 1 van driver and 1 truck driver were not wearing a seat belt, while one motorcycle user did not have a helmet .

By autonomous communities, Madrid has been the one that has suffered the greatest increase in accidents in June, with 5 more deaths than in 2022. On the other side of the scale we find Andalusia and Catalonia as regions that have reduced their accident rate the most, with 6 fewer deceased.

The DGT has also taken stock of the fatal accidents registered during the first operation out of the summer. Between three in the afternoon of last Friday, June 30, and midnight of Sunday, July 2, 11 accidents have been recorded with deaths in which 11 people have perished, 4 of them vulnerable (3 motorcyclists and one cyclist).

The day with the highest accident rate was Saturday, with 8 accidents and 8 deaths, while on Sunday there was one with a fatality and on Friday, two that resulted in two deaths.

The number of long-distance movements registered during this first operation out of the summer was 4.6 million movements, which is 5.8% more than the real movements registered in the first operation in the summer of last year. .
