Galán rules out that a change of government implies changes in energy policy

The result of the elections on July 23 is not an issue that worries Iberdrola's management excessively. This was stated this Wednesday by the company's president, Ignacio Sánchez Galán, in an informal meeting that he held with journalists prior to the Convive awards ceremony, with which Iberdrola recognizes the initiatives that promote nature around its projects in the Rural Spain.

The director of the electricity sector who has been the toughest with the regulatory policies of the Government of Pedro Sánchez, has shown himself more conciliatory than usual this Wednesday. In his opinion, there is a European Union Directive that marks the unstoppable path towards decarbonization and he considers that there is no political party in Spain that is against that path marked out in Brussels.

Asked about the possibility that a coalition government between the Popular Party and Vox could change the policy of closing nuclear power plants in Spain, he recalled that whoever governs governs, that is a matter of figures and of assessing the cost of keep the plants open and who assumes that expense. If the accounts come out and the needs of the electrical system require it, it will be a matter that any government that is in charge of the country must negotiate.

The Chairman of Iberdrola has also insisted on his passion for defending democracy and Europe, for which reason he has recalled that he does not like anything that Spain is different in clear reference to its criticized Iberian exception. In turn, he has sent a message to whoever occupies La Moncloa, remembering that governments pass and the electric companies remain.

Specifically, Galán recalled that he has already met more than a dozen energy ministers, which is why he only asks them to do everything possible to guarantee the security of the investments that companies have to undertake to ensure the transition and energy security.

The manager explained that it is not a question of economic amounts but of clarifying the roadmaps for the profitability of investments and facilitating bureaucratic procedures. Once again, the US Inflation Aid Scheme (IRA) has once again been cited as an example to follow.

Galán has recognized his good relationship with the Popular Party candidate, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, with whom he has negotiated for years the reconversion of the Galician shipyards.

Regarding the company's business issues, Galán has assured that the delays in the acquisition of the American company PNMR are under the normality of the country, although it has gone from contemplating the closing of the operation in the second half of 2023 to the first of 2024.

Faced with the possibility that it may not be closed, although he prefers not to contemplate it, he does remember that the US has become the main recipient country for Iberdrola's investment, so they will continue to advance on the rest of the planned projects.
