Can you be fined for exceeding the speed limit on a bicycle?

Being a cyclist means traveling by bicycle through areas where free movement is not an option. Like any other vehicle, it is important to follow a series of regulations to guarantee everyone's safety and for this reason it is important to know what regulations apply to the cyclist.

Going by bike does not exempt you from respecting traffic lights, pedestrian crossings or sidewalks. Not only for the integrity of oneself, but also to prevent others from having accidents. However, there is a rule that goes unnoticed but also affects cyclists: the speed limit.

This happens because it is assumed that a bicycle will never reach the posted speed limits for motor vehicles. However, it is another norm that governs the cycling speed limit, marking 45 kilometers per hour as the maximum reference.

The traffic law stipulates that: "cycles, mopeds with two and three wheels and light quadricycles (can move at): 45 kilometers per hour." If the circumstances are not abnormal, no cyclist should ride at a speed greater than this.

Despite this point, another clarification is made: "however, bicycle drivers may exceed said maximum speed in those sections in which the circumstances of the road allow them to develop a higher speed". Which means that cyclists can exceed these 45 km/h in some situations.

Within urban areas, the regulation is the responsibility of each municipality, so you must inform yourself of the pertinent limits in each municipality.

But... Can they fine you for exceeding the maximum speed on a bicycle? The answer is yes. The fines have a minimum of 100 euros but would not imply any other reprimand such as loss of points or withdrawal of permission in the case of cars. Travel safely and respect the road regulations when driving with the vehicle you are driving.
