Zapatero: “I ask my colleagues and militants to mobilize and support Sánchez”

During last night and this morning, a multitude of socialist leaders and other members of the coalition Government have shown their support and respect for the decision of the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, to reflect on his continuity at the head of the Executive. The former President of the Government, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, has joined in showing encouragement to Pedro Sánchez in an interview on Hoy por Hoy. "We have to support him and protect him," he assured.

The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, yesterday published a letter to the public in which he announced that he was paralyzing his public agenda until April 29 to reflect and give "a calm response" to the attacks that he and his wife are receiving.

The former socialist president has regretted the attacks from the right and the extreme right and has assured that he understands the feeling that Pedro Sánchez confessed yesterday through the letter. "There is a limit at which one, even if he is a consistent and tough politician, suffers a lot and that limit is your family," he added.

Zapatero has encouraged the entire militancy and his party colleagues to be by Sánchez's side and publicly show their support: "it's okay with a tweet, with going to the group, with a letter, with expressing yourself... but let's react to the insidiousness with democratic courage and not with desistance".

The former president has criticized that the Popular Party does not engage in self-criticism and has assured that he does not see himself capable of reconciling "with those who hate so much."

Furthermore, he has criticized that the PP is trying to destabilize the Government by accusing the country of being in an institutional crisis. "The country is going in an extraordinarily positive direction and that would not happen if there were not a Government at the helm," he concluded.
