Two continents a stone's throw away

In these panoramas in Las Fotos de los Lectores de La Vanguardia we can see how, from Algeciras, the mountains of North Africa can be seen, with the green in the foreground and the ships sailing halfway between the two continents.

It is curious to think that a single photograph can cover tens of kilometres, but this image has managed to bring the coast of Africa closer to the Andalusian coast.

Before our eyes we have two mountains, one located on the European continent and the other on the African, although from perspective, it seems that they are part of the same structure.

The Rif is a region with mountainous areas and green areas in North Africa, with a coast on the Mediterranean, which borders Yebala and extends to Kebdana (Nador), on the border with Algeria.

Algeciras is the largest city in Campo de Gibraltar. It is built in an area of low elevation hills, from north to south from El Rinconcillo to San García.

Its bay, as we can see in the image, is a strategic geographical enclave because it is located in the Strait of Gibraltar, a point of contact between the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. This situation has allowed the city to have a seaport with an extraordinary transit of goods.

In the area near the strait is the landscape known as Cerros del Estrecho, close to the sea, with a very steep slope that sometimes exceeds 30%, forming steep cliffs. The hills of El Centinela and La Horca in the surroundings of Punta Carnero are particularly noteworthy.
