Torrential rains after summer fires leave at least one dead in Greece

Following the fires that devastated the country, Greece is now hit by intense flooding that is causing serious flooding. Torrential rains have flooded homes and roads in Greece and a man has died after a wall collapsed due to bad weather, as reported by firefighters on Tuesday.

Storm Daniel has battered western and central Greece since Monday, prompting hundreds of calls for emergency services to pump out water, just days after a deadly fire that has burned for more than two weeks was brought under control in the north. from the country.

"The man died after a wall collapsed near the city of Volos, probably due to bad weather," a fire official told Reuters, without elaborating.

According to the Athens news agency, the wall collapsed when the man, a rancher, was trying to reach his animals.

Footage from state broadcaster ERT showed cars in Volos, a port city on the Pagasic Gulf, washed away by torrential rains onto muddy shores.

A man went missing in Volos after his car was swept away in the rainstorm, fire brigade spokesman Ioannis Artopoios told Skai television.

"His son got out (of the car), but the father was dragged away and there is a search operation underway right now," Artopoios said. Authorities have restricted traffic in the wider Volos area.

Flash floods have a precedent in Greece: in 2017 they killed 25 people and left hundreds homeless.
