The Barcelona City Council has tendered the works for the construction of a new promenade on Gran Vía de les Corts Catalanes between Badajoz and Bilbao streets. The objective is to create a green promenade to bring more life to the area. With this action, the consistory fulfills its promise to tender the works before the end of the current municipal mandate.

With this project, long claimed by the neighborhood, the Barcelona City Council wants to complete the transformation begun since the opening of the second Glòries tunnel and turn this space into a point that connects the different surrounding neighborhoods and that gives more life to this area by betting on for sustainable mobility and green spaces. To achieve this, the promenade will be structured around a central promenade, about 21 meters wide, which will have spaces to rest and play areas. In addition, 450 trees will also be planted to provide shade and provide more biological diversity. In total, with this intervention, which will begin during the first quarter of 2024, a space of about 70,000 square meters will be modified.

On the side where there are residential buildings, there will be a 5.25-meter-wide sidewalk, which will be widened to 7.35 when there is no service cordon, and also a lane on the platform that will integrate bicycles, service vehicles, and local traffic. . On the other side, where there is a shopping center, the sidewalk will be less wide, 4 meters. In addition, this part of the street will also have a lane for local use and for bicycles and another space for the unfolded tram and for two-way buses. Regarding the intersections with Sèquia Comtal/Llacuna, Rambla del Poblenou/Clot and Ciutat de Granada streets, as well as at the entrances to the shopping centre, wide spaces will be guaranteed to move easily and carry out social, leisure or sports activities.

The materials used for construction will have a low environmental impact and light-colored pavements will also be used to reduce the effect of heat. In addition, it is planned to install energy generation elements, such as a large photovoltaic pergola installed at the exit of the Gran Via tunnels that will function as a visual and sound control mechanism with respect to the Rambla del Poblenou and the Casas school.

The works will be divided into two phases. The first, which will begin during the first quarter of 2024 and will last until the beginning of 2025, will act in the area where there are residential buildings and will cost 11.54 million euros. The second part of the intervention will focus on the urbanization of the sea sidewalk and the doubling of the tram tracks, for which it will be carried out jointly with the Autoritat del Transport Metropolità, which will assume part of the investment. In this case, the works will begin as soon as the first phase is finished and it is estimated that they could last until spring 2026.
