This hotel in a historic building is the most stately in Mallorca

There are hotels that are beautiful and there are establishments with history. There are charming guest houses and there are lodgings that you will fall in love with. Son Net would be all that... although it is also much more: it is the history of an island, it is architecture from the 17th century, it is decoration from the following centuries, it is comfort from the 21st century and it is the style of Finca Cortesín, one of the best hotels in Europe, transferred to Mallorca. Son Net has been a good address for summer, although it is and will also be a cozy hideaway for a quiet autumn.

Continuing with this “there are hotels…”, the Grand Hotel Son Net needs a little more context to explain it well: we are talking about a palace from 1672 in Puigpunyent, at the foot of the Tramuntana mountain range. Historical building that in recent decades was already a beautiful and elegant hotel establishment, although now it has become what will possibly be one of the most prestigious establishments in the Mediterranean.

Since this year, maintaining its historic name, it is also “a Cortesín hotel”, since the Finca Cortesín property, in Casares, Málaga, is one of the symbols of the best and most luxurious European hotels. This new property has firmly taken the reins of the establishment, they have completely renovated it and have applied their famous philosophy of treating their guests well (very well).

The old palace, which is reached by a promising road between palm trees and next to a perfect vineyard, is one of those places that, upon seeing it, makes you want to return. You enter the building with admiration for its history, with curiosity for its location on a hill and with desire for its concept of luxury to accommodate those who know where they have arrived and appreciate the places they pass through. Stone floors, impressive oil paintings, rosewood armchairs, harmony… and peace. Everything seems old, although there is much new, and a feeling of magic achieved by the obsession of a team that wants the experience at Son Net to be perfect, giving free rein to an interior designer who spent two and a half years turning the place into what is today.

Lorenzo Castillo has led the set-up. This interior designer, who is also an art historian, has a special way of understanding spaces for rest, disconnection, surprise, sophistication and detail. Castillo has left his mark on houses, palaces and commercial spaces around the world: Kuala Lumpur, Madrid, Hong Kong, Singapore or Ribadesella. For the Mallorcan project, Javier López Granados, the owner who has proven to be very clear about what hotel luxury is in Andalusia, trusted him blindly.

The idea of the common spaces, rooms and suites of the hotel is to tell the story of Mallorca, and it is there where the interior creator has brought out his passion for both worlds: documenting and being inspired by geographies, people and cultures that have had relationship with the island. He has decorated the 31 rooms in tribute to artists, cities, cultures and countries, with precious fabrics woven by Gastón and Daniela for each room, with the instructions and documents that Castillo has provided.

Each one has its own character, and different views, light or distribution. Everything is different, which amazes the guest, especially those who love design, architecture and art. By the way: in addition to the suites, there are cottages with a pool and a villa accessed directly from a romantic garden.

With 31 rooms, a maximum of 62 people pass through the palace and gardens, so the sensations of privacy, tranquility and enjoyment of beauty are absolute. The pools are double height and are at the foot of the house, and it was the same team in charge of Finca Cortesín that has distributed all the outdoor spaces, including the vineyard that already produces its own wine.

We must add an extra: the Tramuntana mountain range that can be seen from almost any point. Declared a world heritage site by UNESCO, it extends from Andratx, in the southwest, to Pollença, in the northeast, in an imposing manner, as is also the small town of Puigpunyent that does not reach 2,000 inhabitants, and which complements the idyllic of the place. It may be tempting not to leave the establishment even though it is only about 15 kilometers from Palma.

Every great hotel has a great team behind it so that the guest practically does not notice its perfect functioning. Here it happens like this: everything is delicate, perfect, calm and works like a good oiled clock.

In terms of gastronomy, in addition to exceptional room service, there are three proposals: Sea

Mar

Personalized treatments are offered for the body and mind, although the icing on the cake will soon be available with a wellness space of more than 1,000m2, with an indoor saltwater pool, five treatment rooms, a thermal circuit and a fitness center with views of the mountains. And all this, in a simply perfect environment: quiet, beautiful and meticulously cared for, where days of rest transmit to us the art of life.
