They forgive debts to a woman from Tàrrega due to her late husband's compulsive purchases

The court of first instance number 6 of Lleida has forgiven a debt of 31,838 euros to a 78-year-old resident of Tàrrega, who was in a situation of insolvency due to compulsive purchases made by her late husband.

The 84-year-old man's abilities were impaired by the cancer treatment he was receiving and he had purchased products for everyday life that were unnecessary, such as mattresses, kitchenware or an air purifier.

According to the victim's lawyers, the man was convinced through commercial calls, advertisements and home visits. In addition, they pointed out that he acted without his family having knowledge.

The judge has applied the Second Chance Law to the affected person and has exonerated her from the outstanding capital.

The events began in 2018 when the family began to be financially overwhelmed and saw that the pension the couple received was not enough to cover all expenses. Despite being surprised by this situation, the woman could not predict anything, since control of all the accounts and the family economy rested exclusively with her husband.

It turns out that most of the purchases were made in the name of the affected person, without having express authorization on some occasions. In others, the husband told him that it was a small amount, between 100 and 150 euros without knowing that there were also abusive interests.

In this way, the woman's ignorance about the debt that was being generated was total. In fact, until she was widowed she did not know that she had more than 31,000 euros, with interest that reached 26%.
