The works of Llàtzer Garcia and Sergio Baos, contributions by Beckett to Grec

“From the first line he wrote, Llàtzer Garcia already knew that he would go to the Grec”, affirms the director of the Beckett, Toni Casares, at the presentation of the two productions that the venue is presenting at the summer festival. Garcia is the author in residence and, as is customary, he is the one making his debut at the Grec, this year with Al final, les visions.

“Thanks to the collaboration with the Grec we can make these productions”, adds Casares. “The Beckett is the house of text theater. And if Llàtzer Garcia was chosen as the resident author, it was because of the quality of his texts and the level of psychological depth of his characters. It goes very deep”, affirms the director of the Beckett.

“The play Al final, les visions takes an anecdote from when I was young as a starting point, but it is not self-fiction”, says the playwright. “It is a fable based on a tragedy that we experienced with some friends twenty years ago. It's about how you survive a tragedy if you're the survivor and how you live with these absences."

“It also has a part of intrigue, although it is not sought after –adds the author and director–. People sometimes take a long time to know where we come from and what has marked our character. There is also the feeling of guilt. In what way do you maintain his absence and his presence that allows you to live in peace?

With the disappeared friends they formed a music group, and therefore "music is also very present". The actor Joan Carreras, who stars in the piece with Xavi Sáez, Laia Manzanares and Joan Marmaneu, declares: “They are characters who survive in the spaces in which they have to survive”.

The other play, from July 5 to 22, is Paradís, written and starring Sergio Baos and directed by Xavi Núñez. Casares highlights the creativity that Mallorca is experiencing today and sets this example.

"It's a kind of road movie that talks about Mallorca unknown to the Catalans, outsider, dark, scoundrel, with a comic point". Baos explains that Paradís "is about a family, like many in Mallorca, who queue at the food bank."

The offer of the Sala Beckett is completed with the XVII edition of the Obrador d'Estiu, which is "a meeting point for people from all over the world", concludes Casares.
