Vicente Barrera, Valencian vice president and Minister of Culture, of Vox, has requested "as a citizen" to the Valencia City Council to be able to hold a simulated children's bullfighting in the center of the city, as confirmed by sources from his department. The news, reported by eldiario.es and confirmed by this newspaper, responds to a request that Barrera had made for years as a resident of València and that had never been authorized. The objective is, according to sources close to them, "for children to learn about bullfighting culture."
The proposal of Barrera, who was a bullfighter and defends promoting bullfighting as a cultural element, has been submitted to the district board of Ciutat Vella, in Valencia, which must debate the proposal on June 3 and which can be moved forward by majority of the PP and Vox in the municipal government of Valencia. In the years 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023, the current Minister of Culture already presented to the board's working group an activity to close a small urban route to carry out a simulated children's bull run.
From the vice president's entourage it is explained that the requested activity is that "just like the children's pamplonada, it is a family recreational activity in which parents use carts and pitons without live animals (use of toys). At the end of the staging, the children have the opportunity to take the cape and then enjoy a snack of horchata and fartons. The purpose is for the little ones to get to know bullfighting culture up close."
Compromís, upon learning of the petition, has announced that if the government of María José Catalá approves the children's bullfighting in the center of Valencia, they will report the act to the Ombudsman for Minors of Spain, a figure that is integrated into the functions of the Ombudsman. For Compromís, Catalá should demonstrate "today" and announce that it will prevent "this barbarity", an act that Valencians consider "retrograde, crazy and humiliating for minors in the city of Valencia." The Compromís councilor and deputy spokesperson, Glòria Tello, said that "Catalá and Barrera must be reminded that the UN ruled that boys and girls deserve to be protected from the violence generated by bullfighting."
