The revival of Sant Quirze and Santa Julita

In The Photos of the Readers of La Vanguardia we can see a series of photographs of the symbolic sunrise in the church of Sant Quirze i Santa Julita de Muntanyola, in Osona, since this temple was completely rebuilt in 1727, which caused it to remain almost nothing of the previous one of pre-Romanesque origin.

The current baroque building preserves, in its entirety, the collection of its altarpieces. In 1989 it was restored by the Barcelona Provincial Council. The first mention of this temple is found in the year 983.

Of the first pre-Romanesque temple, during archaeological work, the trapezoidal head, remains of the walls of a single nave and remains of a lime pavement on natural clay were discovered.

Traces of a cylindrical tower prior to the construction of the second Romanesque temple were also located at the base of the current bell tower. Despite the hypothesis that it was a bell tower, the elevated door denotes more of a defensive function.

Now, it is ruled out that it is a part of the castle documented since the year 1013 and traditionally associated with the farmhouse called el Castell, furthest from the temple. In the second half of the 12th century, the church was renovated and was consecrated in 1177.

In these images we can see the sunrise around Sant Quirze i Santa Julita, marked by the colors of the candilazo. As part of the phenomenon of dispersion of sunlight, in the morning and afternoon hours, when the sun is closer to the horizon, the light that reaches the Earth is soft tones between red and orange.
