The PSC expands its hegemony in the Barcelona Provincial Council

The PSC will continue to be the leading political force in the Barcelona Provincial Council. The Socialists, who in the last four years have maintained a pact with Junts in the provincial corporation, increase their presence in the institution by going from 16 to 19 deputies. ERC, despite losing five representatives, remains the second force, with 11 deputies, ahead of Junts, which went from 7 to 10 thanks to the good results of Xavier Trias in the city of Barcelona.

The comunes maintain the 5 deputies from the previous term, while Ciudadanos disappears from the provincial map (it loses the four seats it had in the Provincial Council), the PP doubles its presence (from 12 to 4), the party of the mayor of Terrassa, Jordi Ballart, retains the deputy obtained in 2019 and Vox enters the corporation for the first time.

The distribution of deputies is done by judicial districts and in a way that is proportionate to the number of people residing in each one of them. The province of Barcelona is divided into 14 judicial districts. The one in Barcelona corresponds to 18 deputies, which according to the provisional results of the Ministry of the Interior are distributed as follows: PSC, Junts y comunes obtain 4; the PP, 3; CKD, 2; and Vox, 1.

The six deputies provided by the judicial district of L'Hospitalet de Llobregat are distributed as follows: PSC 3 and common, ERc and PP, one each.

In the judicial party of Sabadell, the PSC wins 3 deputies and the rest is assigned to ERC, while in Terrassa, the four seats are shared, one per party, by the PSC, ERC, Junts and Tot per Terrassa.

On the other hand, in Granollers the PSC is left with 2 deputies and the ERC with 1; in Mataró, the three places are shared by ERC, Junts and the PSC. In the judicial district of Sant Feliu de Llobregat, the Socialists (2 deputies) prevailed ahead of ERC (1).

In Manresa the two deputies are for Junts and ERC; in Arenys de Mar, 1 for the PSC and the other for Junts. In Vic, Junts and ERC each have a deputy.

Regarding the judicial districts with a single deputy, the distribution is as follows: the PSC gets the one from Igualada and the one from Vilanova i la Geltrú. In Vilafranca del Penedès it is maintained by Junts, and the one in Berga is for ERC.

With this distribution, the mayoress of l'Hospitalet de Llobregat, the socialist Núria Marín, has all the numbers to revalidate the position of president of the Diputación that she has held for the last four years. The government pacts in the provincial corporation will depend to a large extent on how the negotiations for the formation of majorities in the town halls of the province are developed.

The date of the constitution of the Provincial Council depends on the moment in which all the city councils have been constituted, an issue that depends in turn on the contentious appeals against the proclamation of the elected councillors. However, the inaugural plenary session is scheduled for the month of July.
