The phenomenon of 'curly hair' heaven

Is it the sky or is it the sea? This is the question I asked myself when capturing this photograph in Igualada, in the Anoia region, for La Vanguardia's Readers' Photos.

It seems that the sky is full of waves, as if it were the sea. This is the phenomenon of cirrus uncinus, a type of cirrus. These clouds are generally separated in the sky and are very thin, as seen in the image.

The name cirrus uncinus is derived from Latin and means "curly strands of hair." These clouds appear at very high altitudes, with temperatures of about -40 to -50 °C.

The important thing is that, in this context of drought, these clouds are in the troposphere and usually means that rain is approaching. And, in fact, the forecast indicates that tomorrow, Friday, it will rain in Catalonia.

Its peculiar shape is due to the heavier ice crystals, which evaporate before reaching the ground. They look like curled portions of hair yarn, really.
