The PDECat advocates presenting itself to the generals in coalition with the Espai CiU brand

The PDECat, as La Vanguardia has learned, will stand in the general elections on July 23 in a coalition with the Espai CiU brand, registered by one of its deputies and organization secretary, Genís Boadella, along with other leaders a few months ago. The formation has approved this formula in a telematic meeting of the national council that was held this Thursday afternoon, and plans to hold another meeting of that body within ten days to give the final approval to the candidacies of 23-J.

Along with Boadella, who is the organizing secretary of PDECat, the registration of Espai CiU was formalized by Mateu Comalrena De Sobregrau, mayor of Gallifa and member of the post-convergent management, as well as symbolic president of the new brand, and Marta Pascal, leader of the Nationalist Party of Catalonia (PNC) and former general coordinator of the organization.

A few days ago, after the municipal elections, the heir to the Convergència Democràtica de Catalunya party announced its plans to run in the four Catalan provinces on July 23. In the heat of the triumph of Xavier Trias in Barcelona, there was a slight possibility of an agreement with Junts if the candidate had been Jaume Giró –he himself expressed it on TV3–, but the former minister withdrew from the primaries. In this way, JxCat will have Míriam Nogueras as leader in Madrid and PDECat will wage war on its own.

Espai CiU registered as a political party last October, after Junts left the Government. In PDECat, the reading they made at that moment is that this circumstance left them room to go in the central spectrum, understanding that JxCat was abandoning political centrality. That is why they decided to take the plunge with the new organization. The idea of David Bonvehí's people is to begin the rearticulation of their space with the new brand and they question all those who feel identified with the convergent legacy.

On the other hand, Convergents, the formation of ex-minister Germà Gordó, who has run together with PDECat in other elections, such as the last regional ones that took place or in 33 municipalities on May 28, has also approved this week to run in the general elections of the month coming. However, for now there is no agreement between the two forces, although the will of those from Gordó is that there be an entente.

It also remains to be seen what Centrem does, which is in hibernation phase after the departure of Angels Chacón, shortly after its founding last year. In the municipal ones, Centrem supported the coalition that was articulated around the PDECat, Ara Pacte Local. This time the formation could opt for the same formula.

In the municipal elections on May 28, the PDECat obtained 187 councilors distributed throughout Catalonia and in Barcelona it supported the candidacy of Trias and had Joana Ortega, former vice president of the Government, as representative in sixth place on the list.

In any case, the entente between Junts and PDECat only existed in Barcelona, in the other municipalities the two post-convergent spaces competed. In fact, most of the mayors that the PDECat retained after the divorce with Waterloo in 2020 joined Junts for the municipal elections with various formulas in recent months, leaving those from Bonvehí decimated.
