The mysterious murder in Thailand: "I am guilty, but I was the hostage"

The actor Rodolfo Sancho, who fate has wanted TVE to recover today, after 13 years, in the series La señora, is living a nightmare. His son, Daniel Sancho Bronchalo, 29, is being held in Thailand for a murder to which he has pleaded guilty. The 48-year-old actor, known for his work in television series such as Mar de plástico, El Ministerio del Tiempo or Amar en tiempos revueltos, has issued a brief statement to request the “maximum respect” for his son. Undoubtedly, this is a delicate moment and, as the actor says, "maximum confusion." And the story is complicated at times.

In the statement, Rodolfo Sancho and the family ask "the media to refrain from issuing any hasty judgment" in light of the latest events. They also ask that information not be released "that could interfere in the development of justice and in the correct procedure of the investigation, as well as any diplomatic action that may be in progress."

What is known for now is that Daniel Sancho, a cook by profession, is in the custody of the Thai police. He is accused of murdering Edwin Arrieta Arteaga, a 44-year-old Colombian plastic surgeon, last Tuesday and dismembering his lifeless body in a hotel on the island of Koh Phangan, in the southeast of the country. On Saturday, Daniel pleaded guilty and was arrested, although no formal charges have yet been filed against him. The Thai police initially claimed that Daniel revealed that he had killed Arrieta out of "jealousy" and fear that he would "deceive" him.

However, the young Spaniard, the result of Rodolfo's relationship with Silvia Bronchalo, acknowledged yesterday in statements to the Efe agency that he is guilty of the murder, but assured that he did it because he felt like his hostage. “I am guilty, but I was Edwin's hostage. He held me hostage. It was a glass cage, but it was a cage. He made me destroy my relationship with my girlfriend, he forced me to do things that he would never have done, ”said Sancho during a conversation in front of his Thai public defenders and several agents at the Koh Phangan police station, where he is detained.

Asked if he felt forced by the police to plead guilty, he replied: "I didn't feel comfortable, but I didn't feel forced either." “I felt like I didn't have any other choice either. They took DNA tests and that's it. That's it,” he added.

In his statement, Daniel denied that he had a romantic relationship with the victim, whom he accused of being obsessed with him and threatening him. “He was obsessed with me. He deceived me, he made me believe that what he wanted was to do business with me, to put money into the company of which I am a partner. That we do things together, that we go to Mexico, Chile, Colombia, to open a restaurant. But it was all a lie. The only thing he wanted was me, to be his boyfriend," he said. Arrieta's family reported that they will not make statements so as not to hinder the investigation into his murder.

Sancho, who said he believed his father is already on his way to Thailand and that he would arrive on Monday or Tuesday, could go to court today on the neighboring island of Koh Samui. The judge is expected to review the case and the evidence presented and decide whether he will indict you.

Daniel Sancho arrived in Thailand on July 30 and on the island of Koh Phangan on August 1. And he reported that the Colombian surgeon decided to join his trip. “Every time I tried to get away from him, he threatened me,” he added.

Yesterday, the Thai police carried out, together with the defendant, a reconstruction of the supposed murder of Arrieta. The agents took Sancho to the places where he allegedly dumped different parts of the Colombian's dismembered body, including the sea. A garbage collector had discovered on Thursday a severed pelvis and human intestines hidden in a bag of fertilizer dumped at a dump on the tourist island. During a new search at the same dump on Friday, more human remains were found, including a bag containing two parts of lower limbs, along with a T-shirt and shorts, local media reported.

Among the evidence incriminating Sancho, the police have found a kayak, which he allegedly used to throw a suitcase with the dismembered remains of his victim. Likewise, some security cameras captured Sancho buying knives, a saw and garbage bags at the beginning of the week.

According to the Bangkok Post newspaper, the two men had arranged to travel and meet in Koh Phangan, where the alleged victim had booked a hotel room from July 31 to August 3. Sancho stated that he went to pick up his friend at a pier in Koh Phangan around 3 p.m. on Wednesday and that they spent the day together, and assured the police that his friend disappeared after midnight that same day.
