The Puigverd de Lleida City Council (Segrià) has announced in a statement that the mayor of the municipality, Josep Solsona, is on medical leave. The situation occurs after the mayor of the town was arrested on Friday at noon for an alleged crime of gender violence.
The council has indicated that the deputy mayor Úrsula Barrufet has assumed the functions of accidental mayor. In the statement, the municipal government team asks that Solsona's right to the presumption of innocence be respected.
On Saturday, when the arrest was revealed, the mayor's party, Junts per Catalunya, and the government team showed "dismay" at the events and demanded that he leave the mayor's office. The party has suspended him from membership.
