The Malladas Five (II): eleven years in prison for nothing

The lawyer and soldier Manuel Telo fought for the freedom of five reapers convicted in 1918 for a crime they did not commit on a farm in Cáceres, the Malladas hamlet. Five people were hacked to death; two were girls.

The resistance that the lawyer encountered during his crusade was such that he was forced to go into self-exile for several years in Fuerteventura. From there, he persisted in his objective, relying on Freemasonry and even on the writer Miguel de Unamuno, but to no avail. Only the reappearance of an old friend from the military academy allowed him to open a new path that, finally, led to the release of the Malladas five, but 11 years after his unjust sentence. That friend was Francisco de Borbón, cousin of King Alfonso XIII.
