The crime house of the Marquises of Urquijo is put up for sale

The murder of the Marquises of Urquijo caused a great media stir in Spain. Today, crime is considered one of the criminal plots with the greatest social repercussion and impact on the citizens of our country.

On August 1, 1980, the Marquises of Urquijo were sleeping peacefully in their chalet in Somosaguas when they were surprised and shot dead. The only suspect and convicted of the crime was Rafael Escobedo Alday, who had married Miriam de la Sierra y Urquijo, daughter of the marquises, in 1978. In 1979, due to the deterioration of the marriage, Miriam began a romantic relationship with another man, Richard Dennís Rew.

The person accused of the crime always maintained a speech in which he staunchly defended his innocence. In 1988, Escobedo took his own life while serving a prison sentence, according to him, unjustly. The follow-up of the case went beyond the initial crime, since the judicial process was closely followed by the media of the time and the suicide of the alleged culprit gave a new twist to the crime.

In addition to countless articles, discussions and conversations in the media on the subject, different books have been written about the crime and even audiovisual projects have been recorded: Alone or in the company of others, The crime of the Marquises of Urquijo, etc.

As SEMANA magazine has revealed, the house in which the terrible crime occurred has gone on sale for a price much lower than its real value. This devaluation is due to the fact that the house was the scene of the bloody crime that ended the lives of the aristocrats 44 years ago.

The residence has gone on the market for 3.2 million euros, a price that has sparked controversy, since many think that it is too far from the real value of the chalet and others argue that it is something "exorbitant" if we take into account tells his background.

After the murder of the marquises, the house passed into the hands of his son Juan de la Cierva, who had it in his possession until he died in 2022 due to cancer. It is a 1,020 square meter chalet built on a 4,460 square meter plot, so we are looking at a large property. The house has two floors built, to which must be added a basement of 92 square meters, which includes, among other things, a cinema room, a storage room and a toilet.

The ground floor of the residence (545 square meters) has a living room, a dining room, a library, a hall, a kitchen, an office, an ironing room, three bedrooms and two bathrooms. Additionally, there is an indoor pool and a porch overlooking the large garden. The upstairs, where the murder occurred, has 385 square meters divided into five rooms with their own bathrooms and a small, fully equipped apartment.
