The cold wave surprises Spain with a drastic drop in temperatures, according to Aemet

The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued an urgent alert due to a drastic meteorological change expected for this weekend. According to the statement, a marked drop in temperatures is expected from Sunday, which will affect almost the entire Peninsula and the Balearic Islands.

This abrupt change ends a prolonged period of heat, introducing cold conditions that will intensify rapidly throughout next week. One of the most critical days will be the Diada de Sant Jordi, where showers and cold weather unbecoming for this time of year are expected.

The origin of this change is attributed to the interaction between an anticyclone in northwest Europe and a storm that will impact the central and western Mediterranean. This meteorological phenomenon will cause a considerable drop in temperatures during the next week. Specifically, the decrease will be more pronounced on Monday, with significant decreases in the north and interior northeast of the peninsula.

As a consequence, widespread frosts are expected in large areas of the country, especially in inland regions. Castilla y León, the north and east of Castilla La-Mancha, some areas of Aragon and the Pyrenees will experience the lowest temperatures, which will put these communities on alert. The frosts will be more intense during the early hours of Tuesday the 23rd, reaching atypical minimums for the time.

This episode of extreme cold, although intense, will be brief. The Aemet plans for the anticyclone to move towards the southwest starting on Tuesday afternoon, mitigating the cold wave. With the displacement of the anticyclone, temperatures will begin to gradually recover, with a normalization of the weather expected for Wednesday.
