The Aemet warns of a new heat wave from Monday to Wednesday with temperatures of 44ºC

The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) warns of the irruption of a new heat wave, the second of the summer, between this Monday the 17th and Wednesday the 19th. This situation affects the regions of the center and interior of the peninsula, the depressions of the northeast and the interior of Majorca

The origin of the new heat wave is a broad anticyclone at medium and high levels, located around Tunisia and the central Mediterranean, which will spread westward in the coming days, and will approach the Iberian Peninsula, according to a special notice for heat wave-

In this way, as of Monday the 17th, it will begin to induce a flow from the south and southeast over the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, which will cause a mass of very warm, dry and stable air to enter, with similar characteristics to that already produced by a heat wave at the beginning of this week and, probably, accompanied by high altitude haze.

Together with the high insolation of the time of year, it is expected that it will produce a rise in temperatures from this day on in a good part of the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands (except in the northwestern third), which will reach very high values in central areas and inland south of the peninsula, depressions in the northeast and in the interior of Mallorca during the first half of the week.

On Monday, July 17, the highest temperatures will be reached in the center and interior south of the peninsula and the Guadiana valley, where temperatures will generally exceed 40 degrees, as well as in the Guadalquivir valley, where temperatures will exceed 42 degrees. without ruling out that locally they can reach 44 degrees.

Temperatures will also be high in the south of the North plateau and the interior of the northeast quadrant, exceeding 37-38 degrees in large areas.

On the other hand, on Tuesday, July 18, there will be a rise in temperatures in the eastern third of the peninsula, the upper Ebro and the Balearic Islands, while they are maintained or slightly decreased on the Atlantic slope.

Temperatures will continue to be very high in the center and south of the peninsula, exceeding 40 degrees in large areas, including 42 degrees locally in the Guadalquivir valley.

This day will be especially warm in the northeast quadrant and the Balearic Islands, and it is likely that it will exceed 40 degrees in large areas, without ruling out that it will reach 42 degrees in the Ebro valley, depressions in the northeast, northern Catalonia and inland Mallorca . Temperatures will also be high on the northern plateau, where it is likely to exceed 37 degrees.

As of Wednesday the 19th, a more pronounced drop in temperatures is expected from the northwest, although they will continue to be high in large areas of the interior south and southeast of the peninsula, the Balearic Islands and, with greater uncertainty, the center of the peninsula.

It is probable that they will continue above 40 degrees in large areas of the center of the peninsula and inland Mallorca, as well as in the southeastern third of the peninsula and the Guadalquivir valley, where they could exceed 42 degrees locally. In the depressions of the northeast it is probable that they will also exceed 39-40 degrees.

The minimum temperatures will also be very high during the episode, especially on Tuesday and Wednesday, with tropical nights, above 20 degrees, and even locally above 25 degrees, in the southeastern half of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands, and also affecting the Mediterranean coastal areas.

Finally, as of Thursday, July 20, the drop in temperatures will most likely extend to the entire national territory, giving rise to the end of the heat wave episode, although it is likely that on this day the temperatures will still be elevated in the Guadalquivir valley.
