Sarkozy sentenced to wear an electronic bracelet

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has once again been sentenced this Wednesday, in the appeal trial, to three years in prison for corruption and influence peddling, one of which was firm. The sentence, which will be appealed before the Court of Cassation, stipulates that this year in prison can be avoided if Sarkozy wears an electronic bracelet so that his movements can be controlled, an unprecedented measure for a former head of state.

The conviction in the so-called "wiretapping case", linked to the financing of his 2007 election campaign, is one of the court cases that has been persecuting Sarkozy for years. He has always considered himself the victim of unfair persecution for political reasons and has vehemently defended his innocence and honor.

The lawyer Jacqueline Laffont immediately announced an appeal and used very harsh words against the court, which she accused of "giving moral lessons" and "not applying the law." Ella laffont insisted that Sarkozy "is innocent of the facts for which he is accused." "We will go to the end and the law will triumph," added the lawyer.

Sarkozy was the first former president of the French Republic sentenced to firm prison. Jacques Chirac, also a conservative, whose minister Sarkozy was, was sentenced to two years in prison in 2011 for the case of fictitious jobs in the Paris mayor's office, but they did not imply effective imprisonment. Chirac's health would not have allowed it either.
