Red alert for extreme temperatures on the southern coast of Alicante and in the Vega Baja del Segura

Between one in the afternoon and nine at night tomorrow, Wednesday, July 19, the State Meteorological Agency forecasts a maximum temperature of 44 degrees Celsius in the Vega Baja del Segura and 42 on the southern coast of the province of Alicante. which will be reached mainly in the western half of the area, with the rest remaining at 36-39ºC.

These data assume the immediate activation of the red level due to extreme temperatures in those regions, the maximum provided by the Emergency service of the Generalitat Valenciana. The interior of the province of Valencia and the northern interior of Alicante maintain the orange level, while the rest of the coast and Castellón will enjoy milder temperatures.

In this type of situation, the Valencian Generalitat reminds that those who are most at risk are children under 5 years of age, people over 65 years of age, those who are overweight and those whose activity requires physical effort and in places with heat sources, in addition to the sick who take certain medications.

The authorities advise drinking plenty of water and fluids (alcoholic or caffeinated beverages are not suitable, but sports drinks are; eat in small amounts, preferably fruits and vegetables; wear thin, loose clothing that covers the largest surface area possible and in light colours; use protection from the sun's rays; avoid unnecessary physical exertion, use air conditioning and plan daily activities when the temperatures are not so high.

In addition, it is advisable to monitor children and the elderly, check their condition and fluid intake and never leave children, the elderly or pets in a parked car during periods of intense heat.

Faced with a person who is ill due to heat, the authorities recommend asking for medical help and while you get it, lower the temperature by taking it to a cool place and applying water on cloths or a shower. If he is unconscious and breathing heavily, turn his head to the side and keep his airway clear.
