Plaza de la Independencia, the new meeting point for young people in Girona

The Plaza de la Independencia in Girona is one of the most important and visited squares in the city, not only because of its history, but because it is also one of the new meeting points for young people from Girona.

One of the many charms of this square is neither more nor less than its central location that connects with many other emblematic places, such as the Rambla de la Llibertat, the Cul de la Lleona or the Cathedral.

This square, surrounded by restaurants, is one of the busiest in the city. The space was designed by Martí Sureda on the site of the old convent of Sant Agustí, as detailed by the City Council.

In recent years, many clubs and nightclubs have opened in Independence Square and its surroundings to give more life to the city, since the lack of parties had always been a concern for young people.

Until relatively recently, the meeting point for youth had always been the Rambla, due to its long street of restaurants and bars, but, for a few years, the Plaza de la Independencia has been embracing the crowds with the opening of new restaurants and new entertainment venues.

As can be seen in one of the photographs captured by Toni Matamala for La Vanguardia's Readers' Photos, this square has a neoclassical style porticoed space and is surrounded by several buildings whose balconies give a lot of life to the area.

In the center of this square stands a monument dedicated to the defenders of the city besieged by French troops in 1809. It was built in 1894 by the architect Antoni Parera.
