One dead and six injured in a traffic accident in Empuriabrava

One man died and six people were injured early yesterday morning in a traffic accident that occurred in the Empuriabrava urbanization, in Castelló d'Empúries (Alt Empordà). The Generalitat Fire Brigade reported that the incident occurred when a tourism, with four passengers on board, hit another that was parked with no one inside, both falling into the Empuriabrava canal. Four other people who were in the area were hit and also fell into the water.

The fatality, allegedly, is the driver of the vehicle. Two of the three passengers were rescued by the Firefighters while the fourth would have left by his own means, according to testimonies of the events to the firefighters.

The accident occurred after midnight. Ten teams of firefighters from the Roses, Llançà and Figueres parks, as well as two teams from the Grup d'Actuacions Especials Subaquàtiques (GRAESub) went to the area after the numerous calls received by 112 warning of what had happened and that there had been several people in the water.

The Firefighters reported that at 00:32 hours, two divers from the Roses park had already dived to provide air from their tanks to the victims of the event and proceed as soon as possible to their rescue.

The scenario was very confusing, since it was unknown how many people had fallen into the water when they were hit by tourism.

The firefighters removed three of the four passengers from the vehicle that caused the accident, since one had apparently already left and left the place on his own, according to the hypothesis that is being considered as a result of what the people who witnessed the events said. One underwent resuscitation maneuvers, but nothing could be done to save his life, and the other two were evacuated with injuries of varying degrees, according to a statement from the Bombers.

In coordination with the local police of Castelló d'Empúries, the Firefighters concluded that the second car that had sunk in the canal was parked in the area with no one inside. But they did verify, as witnessed by eyewitness accounts, that several pedestrians had been dragged into the canal. Firefighters, Mossos d'Esquadra, local police, personnel from the Servei d'Emergencies Mèdiques (SEM) and citizens who were at the scene pulled several people out of the water, including some of those run over who, at the time of the sinister, they dined on a bench overlooking the canal.

When all the people were safe, the GRAEsub divers went back under to carry out another inspection in the two sunken vehicles and in the surroundings with the objective of verifying that neither the fourth passenger nor any other bystander were in danger in the water. .
