Max, merger between HBO Max and Discovery, bets on live sports: price and arrival in Spain

The Max streaming platform, arising from the merger of HBO Max and Discovery, finally has a launch date in Spain. During a keynote speech at Mipcom Cannes on Monday, the president of Warner Bros. Discovery's international division, Gerhard Zeiler, and the head of streaming for Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), Leah Hooper, Max will arrive in Spain, and to 22 more countries, in the spring of 2024.

This represents an important milestone in the expansion strategy of this platform, as it is expected to arrive approximately one year after its launch in the United States. And one of the most important aspects of this platform is that it will offer live sports broadcasts, thanks to Eurosport's rights portfolio, according to Variety. This will include coverage of major events such as the Grand Slam tennis tournaments, cycling grand tours and the Paris Olympics in 2024.

“We are a content company. We are storytellers. That is our mission. That's our vision [...] And when you look at the stories we tell, it's really broad-based: from feature films to scripted content, unscripted television content, animation, sports and news," Zeiler said.

Despite the enthusiasm for Max's arrival in Europe, there are still some unknowns to be resolved. One of the key aspects is the pricing structure and specific subscription plans for each market.

In the United States, Max offers three options: Max 'Ad-Lite' (with ads and a cost of $9.99 per month -99.99 per year), Max 'Ad-Free' (without ads and a fee of 15 $.99 per month - $149.99 per year) and Max 'ultimate ad free' for $19.99 per month ($199.99 per year). Each of these plans has differences in video quality and features, but it has not yet been announced how these prices and plans will adapt to different European markets.

According to what has emerged, the HBO Max and HBO catalog will be kept internally and will incorporate Discovery content. Thus, subscribers to this platform will be able to enjoy successful productions such as Game of Thrones, The Last of Us, And Just Like That. Of course, it is also worth noting that it is not known which of this content will be preserved in each country; Therefore, the definitive catalog of Spain is still unknown.
