Mary of Denmark's amulet dress before becoming queen

Queen Margaret of Denmark surprised this past Sunday, hours before saying goodbye to 2023, with the announcement of her abdication. After 52 years of reign, Europe's longest-serving monarch will hand over the throne to her eldest son, Prince Frederick, who will reign alongside his wife, Princess Mary.

Less than twenty-four hours after her powerful speech, Queen Margaret presided at her final New Year's banquet and reception at Amalienborg Royal Palace in Copenhagen, a traditional event that brought together her entire family, including the future kings of the Danish.

Princes Frederick and Mary captured all eyes in one of their last public appearances before becoming monarchs, a proclamation that will take place on January 14. From that moment on, Prince Frederick will be named King Frederick X and his 18-year-old son, Prince Christian, will become the heir.

At his side, Princess Mary, whom he married in 2004 and is the mother of his four children. The Australian dazzled this Monday with a design that was a statement of intentions, in terms of fashion, about how she will dress when she is already Queen.

For the occasion, the princess opted for one of her favorite dresses that she debuted in January 2007, precisely for this same event. It is a burgundy velvet design from Birgit Hallstein, with a boat neckline, fitted at the waist and with a belt in the same fabric and a small brooch and an elegant train.

The future monarch chose this same dress that has a very special meaning. The most curious thing is that she has been modifying the piece over the years. When she first wore it seventeen years ago, the princess wore it with a much more pronounced, empire-cut neckline. She wore it again a month later and when she got it back in January 2012, she already wore it with a tighter neck and tight waist.

As accessories for her look for the reception, Princess Mary opted for blue pumps by Gianvito Rossi, a crystal clutch by J. Fumani and her favorite tiara: the Rubies tiara, also known as the Currant tiara.

A jewel, which dates back to 1804, which belonged to Queen Ingrid - Prince Frederick's grandmother - and which has diamonds, rubies and currant leaves. The princess has worn it on many occasions, such as when she posed for her 50th birthday.
