Marine explorer Sylvia Earle releases the recovered turtle “Hope” into the sea in Valencia

The biologist and marine explorer, Dr. Sylvia Earle, released a recovered sea turtle this morning in the ARCA del Mar at the Oceanogràfic in Valencia together with the mayor of the city, María José Catalá.

The beach of El Parador de El Saler has been the place chosen to release “Hope”, the name with which they have baptized the turtle, and it has been the closing event of Dr. Earl's visit to the Valencian aquarium.

As Sylvia Earl has mentioned, “this release is a symbol of hope for the ocean. The Valencians, the Spanish, are contributing to the ocean. “Hope for the ocean is also hope for all of us.”

“Turtles were on our planet years before the dinosaurs and will continue to be there after us if we continue to take care of them,” he added.

Mayor Catalá explained that this special event “marks an important milestone in the context of the European green capital 2024.”

Catalá has also praised the work of the Oceanogràfic Foundation, whose social commitment is to provide new knowledge, improve the care and well-being of animals and inform and raise awareness among the entire society, with the aim of improving the conservation of species and their natural habitat. ”.

After months of care and treatment by the veterinarians of the Oceanogràfic Foundation, “Hope” has returned to the sea today and has done so with a satellite tracking device, which will allow the scientific community to expand knowledge about biology and its migratory route. .

The event was attended by various authorities, including the Councilor for Institutional Relations of the Valencia City Council, Juan Carlos Caballero, Celia Calabuig, president of the Oceanogràfic and Fundación Oceanogràfic; Eugenio Calabuig, president of Global Omnium and Fundación Aguas de Valencia; Leocadia García, general director of the Oceanogràfic and director of the Oceanogràfic Foundation; Ana Ortells, general director of the City of Arts and Sciences, Daniel García, technical director of the Fundación Oceanogràfic; and José Luis Crespo, head of conservation at the Fundación Oceanogràfic.

In addition, volunteers from the Oceanogràfic Foundation, staff from the Azul Marino Foundation, Global Omnium employees and technicians from the Ministry for the Ecological Transition have attended.

The prominent presence of Dr. Sylvia Earle at this event emphasizes the importance of global collaboration in protecting our marine life.

His tireless dedication to ocean exploration and conservation continues to be a beacon of inspiration for the scientific community and all those committed to preserving our precious marine ecosystem.
