Marcos Alonso will undergo surgery

FC Barcelona player Marcos Alonso will undergo surgery next week. The Catalan club reported this Sunday that the footballer will undergo an intervention to solve the lumbar problems that he has been experiencing for several weeks. “At the end of the intervention, a new medical report will be provided,” states the FC Barcelona statement.

Marcos Alonso has been off the pitch since the beginning of the month. The last game he played was on November 7, against Shakhtar Donetsk, in the group stage of the Champions League. And his last call-up was on November 28, also in Europe, for the match against Porto, although he did not play any minutes. Throughout the month of December, his problems in his lower back have even prevented him from training normally and the player has not been available again under the command of Xavi Hernández.

Barça discussed with the player different ways to deal with his injury and finally decided to undergo surgery, although the club has not specified the specific day on which the intervention will be performed next week.

The defender has played seven games this season, four in the League and three in the Champions League, starting four times and accumulating almost 300 minutes. His back injury has left him out of the squad in five games in the last month.

Without yet knowing how many weeks Xavi will lose Marcos Alonso, a footballer without much weight in the team, the Terrassa coach will start the year without some of his most important pieces. Iñigo Martínez is still out of combat, with an injury to his femoral biceps; Pedri, also with muscle problems; in addition to Gavi, who broke his crusaders with the Spanish team in November and Marc-André ter Stegen.

The Blaugrana goalkeeper also had to undergo surgery due to back problems. He underwent surgery at the beginning of December in Bordeaux and will be out for two to three months. Without the injured, Barça will open 2024 in Las Palmas on January 4.
