“If humor wasn't wrong, it wouldn't make you laugh”

Claude Verneuil (Christian Clavier) watched in horror as his four daughters married men he did not like: a Chinese, a Muslim, a Jew and a black man. That happened in 2013 in God of mine, but what have we done to you? , a comedy by Philippe de Chauveron that was a hit in France and much of it abroad. Today, nine years and one installment later, the third part arrives in theaters, in which Verneuil, a retired French notary, seems to have accepted his sons-in-law, although deep inside he is still as racist as at the beginning. .

"If humor weren't politically incorrect, it wouldn't make people laugh," says Clavier in an interview with La Vanguardia given for the Spanish premiere of Dios mía, but what have you done to us? . And it is that the film has a lot of incorrect. For example, Verneuil and his wife travel to China and are forced to pay a visit to their in-laws. They go to the wrong house and end up in a neighbor's apartment, but since they see all Chinese the same, they don't flinch at the mistake. Although, of course, the real in-laws do feel somewhat annoyed.

And it's in-laws, because the daughters of the conservative couple decide to throw a surprise party for their parents' 40th wedding anniversary and invite all the in-laws, which drives Verneuil crazy. The character has crumbs, but Clavier, one of the best known comedians in his country for the Asterix series, does not feel uncomfortable playing the old-fashioned notary because "the public is much more intelligent than they think and has never confused me with character; on the contrary, they have a lot of fun with him”, he assures while defending the director of the film: “ De Chauveron is not racist at all and, in fact, neither is the protagonist of the film, he is simply afraid of foreigners of what you don't know."

“I am neither Asterix nor Napoleon nor the jester of the visitors. I've been lucky enough to play many characters, but I'm not any of them”, insists the actor, who boasts of his comedic side: “I have a gift for comedy and for making the public laugh; when I go on stage, people find it funny, it's something I discovered when I was 14 years old, I was born with it, but I've been working on it”, he adds.

At 70, Clavier is not short of work. He is preparing a series about Paris during the Nazi occupation where he plays a man who lives off the black market and ends up in the resistance. In addition, he will shoot a film about teenagers in France and another in Italy. At the moment, it is not known if there will be a fourth installment of the God of mine series, the actor explains that "in France there has always been freedom and financing to make films, including politically incorrect films", but he is also aware that "now, with American platforms and productions, there may be a wave of puritanism."
