Health alert in Maresme due to a wild boar with trichinosis

The Generalitat has notified the Arenys de Mar City Council and surrounding municipalities of a case of trichinosis detected in a wild boar hunted in Sant Cebrià de Vallalta (Maresme). The Department of Health received the notification last September 15.

Given that the existence of infested animals poses a risk of transmission of trichinosis from animals to people, the department warns that the consumption of meat that is not health controlled should be avoided. In this sense, they remember that wild boar meat distributed through commercial circuits, including restaurants and retail trade, must necessarily have been obtained in authorized game handling establishments and registered in the Health Registry of Industries and Food Products of Catalonia.

Trichinosis is transmitted through the consumption of raw or undercooked meat products, which contain the parasite Trichinella spp. It can be found in the meat of animals such as wild boar, domestic pig, horse, bear, fox, rat or wolf. Wild animals, especially carnivores or omnivores, can be considered a potential source of the disease. Pork and wild meat must be cooked thoroughly to kill the encysted organism. Freezing is also effective but only for certain species of the parasite.
