Girma breaks the world record and Katir, the European one, in the fastest 3,000 m in history

The fastest race in history in the 3,000 indoor track took place this Wednesday in Lievin (France). An impressive one-on-one between the Ethiopian Lamecha Girma and the Spanish Mo Katir. A huge pulse since they broke the test in its equator. Always Girma ahead. Always Katir to slipstream. Always until the last breath. Without giving an iota. It seemed that Katir, theoretically faster by having better marks than his rival in 1,500, could pass him but Girma held the type. But between the two of them they managed to pulverize the universal registry. Because both surpassed the current record until this Wednesday, owned by the Kenyan Daniel Komen since 1998.

7m23s81 for Girma, 7m24s68 for Katir, who set the European record. Komen had signed 7m24s90 25 years ago. Six of the eight competitors in the race achieved personal bests. Awesome.

Katir, who has given up participating in the European indoor track at the beginning of March in Istanbul, wanted to test himself after trying this winter cross-country experience. And he must have gained depth and legs in this hard specialty, since he seemed brave and resistant. It was not easy, first to keep up with the hares and then with Girma, who, considering they were left alone, began to shoot like a man possessed, while the public cheered in a charming venue, where the temperature rises.

In a meeting of great stars, with the presence of Armand Duplantis (6.01 meters, pole vault victory) or Jakob Ingebrigtsen, who prevailed in his comeback with a brilliant performance in 1,500 (3m32s38), Girma and Katir were crowned.

Katir's European record and second best world record of all time obviously exceeds the Spanish record. It was owned by Adel Mechaal (7m30s82) since last year and it was also the best European brand ever until now.
