Germany will soon resume cooperation with UNRWA

The German Government announced this Wednesday that it will soon resume cooperation with the United Nations Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) after it declared that it will "quickly and fully" implement the recommendations of the independent report commissioned by the UN to improve its operation.

"In this context and in support of these reforms, the German Government will shortly continue its cooperation with UNRWA in Gaza, as Australia, Canada, Sweden and Japan, among others, have already done," reported the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation. Economic and Development.

The joint statement adds that Germany will coordinate closely with its closest international partners on the disbursement of more funds and notes that UNRWA's short-term financing needs in Gaza are currently covered by existing funds.

By continuing this urgent cooperation, Germany supports "the vital and currently irreplaceable role of UNRWA" in providing aid to the population of Gaza, since other international humanitarian organizations also currently depend on the operational structures of that UN Agency, points out.

In this sense, Germany indicates that the recommendations of the report commissioned from a commission chaired by former French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna "must now be implemented without delay."

The German Government recalls that the G7 recently stressed that UNRWA and other UN agencies must be able to fully fulfill their mandate to distribute humanitarian aid in Gaza and highlights that "this is more important than ever in view of the persistent humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza ".

The statement added that the German government has intensely analyzed the accusations leveled by Israel against UNRWA and has been in close contact with the Israeli government, the United Nations and other international donors.
