Franck Dubosc: "We are afraid of growing old without having solved our problems first"

Waking up the ghosts of the past is not always a good idea, although sometimes, on very rare occasions, it can end with a happy ending. Get in situation. A father abandons his wife, pregnant. For years, contact with them is nil. In his defense, although that does not justify the facts, saying that he was not aware of that pregnancy until some time later. And then it happens. A heart attack. A change in life, in day to day, in reflections. An opportunity to take stock of life and realize everything that has been done wrong.

This is the premise with which Rumba therapy starts, the new film by Franck Dubosc that hits theaters this Friday and in which the filmmaker also becomes the main protagonist. “Although I cannot say that Tony, my character, is inspired by me, because basically I would never abandon my children, I do recognize that there are traits in which I can see myself reflected. The main one, and the reason in part for which I have embarked on this production, is that I wanted to apologize to my little ones in the way I know best: making movies. My apology is because I feel that for work I have had to abandon them, metaphorically speaking, many times. That is something that weighs”, the French filmmaker admits to La Vanguardia.

Despite the fact that the film's synopsis and approach has dramatic overtones, it can be said that this is the genre that Dubosc is best at, a comedy. And not just any one. This is to rumba rhythm. And it is that when Tony finds out that his daughter is a dance teacher, he decides to sign up for her classes. Of course, without revealing her identity. “He thinks it's the best way to get closer to her and earn her trust on her own merits. I think it's something risky”, advances the filmmaker.

Dubosc admits that “in a situation like this, I don't think I would be as brave as Tony. I would also think carefully about whether or not I have the right to burst into the life of someone to whom I have done so much damage. It is very lawful and necessary to ask for forgiveness, but we must also understand that not everyone can forgive and they are within their rights. My niece, for example, experienced something similar and she did accept the apology but then she never saw her father again. Each family and person is a world. What often happens is that we are afraid of growing old without having solved our problems beforehand”, says the director.

There are several challenges that Dubosc has had to face in his second film. The first and most obvious, directing and interpreting at the same time. But then, he admits, “I faced dance for the first time. And more in this more professional way. At first, a large part of the team signed up for classes, more to try than for anything else. But as soon as I had been in class for three minutes, I was very envious of the teachers and their talent. I'm a very bad dancer but I don't give up. It has been a discovery".

Despite the fact that he is in the middle of promoting the film, Dubosc admits that he is already immersed in what will be his third film, which he anticipates will be a crime comedy.
