Flamenco, culture and tradition from generation to generation

The Ministry of Culture presents Back to Flamenco. The paths of an inherited and living heritage, a four-day seminar in Madrid to learn in depth about this artistic genre. Their origins, their protagonists throughout history and their repertoires, their unique ways of communicating and moving will be the protagonists of the Auditorio del Ministerio (Calle San Marcos, 40) and the Tablao Flamenco 1911 (Plaza de Santa Ana, 15), which will host the closing of the seminar.

Every morning from May 7 to 10 – both included – experts, scholars and artists will lead conferences aimed at focusing on the pillars of flamenco and claiming the importance of preserving this art form that encompasses singing, playing and dancing.

The seminar will consist of 16 events in which participants will be able to delve deeper and understand key aspects of this artistic genre: typical clothing, such as the Manila shawl; the identity codes and structures of the language used that are due to its creator, the Andalusian gypsy people; or the gender and social perspective of flamenco. Each day will end with a discussion table in which attendees and speakers will be able to share the doubts, ideas and thoughts that arose during the day.

Some of the hosts of the various talks that the seminar will offer are Fernando López Rodríguez, dancer with a doctorate in Aesthetics and member of the Academy of Performing Arts of Spain since 2020; Encarnación Aguilar Criado, professor in Social Anthropology at the University of Seville and author of several books on Andalusian culture and folklore; or Ángeles Toledano, internationally recognized and awarded singer on multiple occasions.

Attendees at Back to Flamenco. The paths of an inherited and living heritage will be placed in the current panorama of this complete art, knowing in depth its traditions, singularities and references.

The event is aimed at all those people interested in the study of the manifestations of intangible cultural heritage, recognition that UNESCO granted to flamenco in 2010. Registration is free, but attendance must be confirmed by filling out this Factory of Art and Crafts form. Development, since places are limited.
