Montgat is a coastal town located in the Maresme region. It is known for its beaches, magnificent mountain landscapes, monuments of interest and its old town made up of whitewashed houses that retain their appearance as fishermen's homes.
Precisely, the old fishermen's neighborhood stars in this photographic report in Las Fotos de los Lectores de La Vanguardia. It dates back to the 18th century and is located on the Montgat hill, at the foot of the coast, forming a beautiful landscape of white houses.
Montgat has a fish auction that is held in the Lonja, which everyone can visit and where you can buy fresh fish.
It is the only traditional auction that is still held on the Catalan coast. The Montgat fishermen bring a variety of fish from the sea, including scorpion fish, cuttlefish, red mullet, squid, roosters, San Pedro fish, spiders, prawns, sole, heels or parrots.
In addition, its old neighborhood of Sant Joan is located right next to the beach. Its messy little houses painted white offer us the typical Mediterranean coastal image.
Old fishermen's houses stretch out by the sea along the promenade, where you can enjoy a pleasant walk, bike ride or play sports. Volleyball, beach tennis and sailing are very present in the daily sporting life of Montgat.
To get to Montgat we can take the railway from Barcelona, with several trains at the end of the day that take approximately 40 minutes to arrive. There is also bus service. Several lines connect the towns of the Costa del Maresme and these with the city of Barcelona itself.
By private vehicle, from Barcelona, you can take the C-31 highway, while if you are traveling from the north the most direct is the C-32. However, if you are not in a hurry, it is recommended to travel along the N-II along the entire coast and with beautiful landscapes.
As for the gastronomy of Montgat, to round off the visit to the fishing district, a good option is to try the fish sauces.
