Carlos Latre: "People get emotional when I imitate Rubianes because we miss him"

This is the third time that Carlos Latre has performed in Barcelona with One man show. It came with the restrictions of 50% of the capacity, then it was at 70% with the theater always full, and now finally the Coliseum can put on sale the more than 1,200 tickets for the Balañá Group's Gran Via venue in Barcelona. From December 1 to February 5, Carlos Latre deploys more than a hundred characters on stage in this frenetic show.

Doesn't such a big theater make you dizzy?

We have filled with perimeter confinements and all kinds of restrictions, we had to advance the functions, the police at the door...

Police? For some gag?

No, because people had to go home soon! It was a good chicken, but we know that many people were left with the desire and there are others who will repeat it.

Isn't it the same show?

No, because it is a very live show, which incorporates current affairs, such as the World Cup in Qatar or the elections, and it changes every day. It's renovated.

Will your fans also find the usual characters?

Of course! The classics are always there, like Núñez, Messi or Serrat, who is doing the farewell tour and we pay homage to him. And Pepe Rubianes always comes back.

Did he admire Rubianes?

A lot, and we were very fond of each other. I always think about what he would say about the closure of the Capitol, the insecurity of the Rambla, the superblocks, the procés, the Sagrada Família, teleworking or the pandemic. I pay tribute to him.

What are the current characters?

Well, Pedro Sánchez, María Jesús Montero with the budgets, Yolanda Díaz and the inclusive language, Ayuso, President Aragonès, Ada Colau, the Luis Enrique streamer. We always touch many aspects of today.

So today's show will be different from next month's?

Absolutely. We update things based on what is spoken in bars and in the city.

Christmas is coming.

Christmas gives a lot of itself, because of the gifts, because of the shabby nativity scene in the town hall... Let's see how it will be this year.

With all these characters, do you mix Spanish and Catalan?

Yes, of course, because Catalan characters appear. Now I am at home: I come and go.

Do you sing too?

There is a lot of music. We have incorporated Serrat, Pablo López, Elton John or Shakira with the case of Piqué, that we make him a special song.

The show has toured.

We have already been to 17 cities and more than 150,000 spectators have seen it, which is ridiculous. People really want to laugh and really need to laugh; They thank us very much.

Which is more comfortable, with this chained imitation show or with a musical like Golfus de Roma, which you starred in in Madrid?

They are different disciplines. Now Jordi Bosch does it here at Barcelona. I went to see it and I was very moved, because I did it for 140 performances. Now, making a musical seemed very hard to me, but I had a great time and I felt very comforted for having been able to defend a character like Pseudolus with a score by Sondheim, which is very complicated, and to do it in Mérida, which was crazy, and then in Madrid. It is very demanding. However, One man show is my son and it is where I feel most comfortable, where I can create and sing, with a super versatile team.

How long is the show?

An hour and a half. I am obsessed with rhythm and everything has to be one goal after another. We play the safe card.

How many characters can you imitate?

More than 600. But the people who come to the theater will see something different from what they have seen with the imitations on TV. I want to show that I am not just an imitator, because I sing, dance and interpret, it is a multidisciplinary show, where the evolution that I have made during 25 years is.

With which character does the public laugh the most?

With Pepe Rubianes. People get emotional because we miss him.
