Bimbo closes the El Verger factory (Alicante) with 90 workers on staff

CCOO Industria has denounced that the management of Grupo Bimbo informed the representatives of the workers at the El Verger factory (Alicante) this Wednesday of its decision to close the workplace. The union has shown its rejection of the decision and has announced that it is studying a calendar of mobilizations.

The El Verger plant employs 90 people and is dedicated to the manufacture of toasted bread and Takis. The union has indicated in a statement that the factory is more than 50 years old, it was the old Ortiz factory and "it had become a reference for the region, which lives off tourism and lacks industrial activity that is fundamental."

CCOO has explained that a 30-day negotiation period now begins in which the union "will try to find the best solution for the workforce", with the aim of defending employment and activity.

After hearing the news of the closure, the union held a meeting of workers and the staff gave their approval to call a calendar of mobilizations, if necessary, to avoid the closure. "The staff made it clear to Bimbo's management that they will not make it easy for them and that they will stand up to this process," CCOO stressed.

The union has indicated that it does not understand the decision that Grupo Bimbo has made. Upon verifying that the production of the roasting line had decreased, CCOO asked the management on several occasions about the situation of the factory and the company "always transmitted a message of tranquility to the staff and is now making the most traumatic decision," he criticized. .

In this situation, he has shown rejection of Grupo Bimbo's strategy and its decision to empty the Alicante plant of its contents, while at the same time showing his "conviction that it is possible to maintain production in El Verger." "Maintaining activity and employment is not incompatible with the recent opening of a Takis manufacturing line in the Santa Perpètua factory (Barcelona)," he defended.

The CCOO executive at Grupo Bimbo will meet in the coming days to analyze the situation that caused the closure decision and propose support measures.
